BAD MOFO DOGS · THE MEASURING GUIDE

Big personality.
Measure for the fit.

A flexible tape. Or a shoelace and measuring tape. Your dog supplies the attitude.

For Cuban buckle collars. Training collars and harnesses need different fit checks.

AROUND THE NECK

Two fingers. A comfortable fit.

A Cane Corso with a tape around the middle of its neck. Two fingers sit between the tape and fur while another hand holds the overlap.
Middle of the neck. Two fingers underneath.

Let your dog stand comfortably. Wrap a flexible sewing tape around the middle of the neck, where the collar sits. Slide two fingers underneath. Keep it snug over your fingers, without squeezing.

Keep those two fingers in place when you read or mark. This is BMD’s two-finger measurement. Do not add another 1–2 inches afterward.

SAVE THE MEASUREMENT

Read where it meets.

182022in0Read the overlapExample: 20 inches · not a collar size

Read the inch scale where the start of the tape meets it. Write down the measurement in inches, including any fraction.

Measure twice.
If the readings differ, take one more. Keep the tape or string level.

YOUR MEASUREMENT · INCHES

Measured it? Enter it here.

Enter your measurement in inches, taken with two fingers underneath. We’ll match it to your collar family’s offered sizes in Step 4.

Use the inch scale on your measuring tape. Enter fractions as decimals: ½ inch = 0.5; ¼ inch = 0.25; ¾ inch = 0.75.

Cuban buckle collars

Regular Cuban collars use fixed size labels from 16 to 28 inches, in 2-inch steps.

16 · 18 · 20 · 22 · 24 · 26 · 28 in

Use BMD’s two-finger rule: choose that size if it is offered, or the next larger offered size. Don’t round down and don’t add another 1–2 inches. If the measurement is outside the family’s range, or your dog has a slim head and the collar could slip off, ask us before ordering.

Enter your measurement in Step 3.Then confirm the two-finger method to see the matching offered size.

Uses your unrounded measurement. This does not change your product selection; choose the size on the product page and check availability.

Run a flexible tape around the inside—not the outside of the links. The red line shows the concept, not a measured dimension.

Open length is a different measurement. If you lay the collar open and measure end to end, include the clasp and call it “open length.” Clasp parts can overlap when closed. Keep that number separate from your dog’s neck measurement.

This walkthrough follows BMD’s published Cuban buckle-collar instructions. Slip chains, prong collars and harnesses have separate product-specific sizing.

HOW TO MEASURE

For Cuban collars with a buckle, wrap a cloth measuring tape around the middle of your dog’s neck with two fingers under the tape and record that measurement. Do not add another 1-2 inches after measuring with two fingers.

If you do not have a flexible measuring tape, use string in the same position with two fingers under it, mark where the ends meet, then lay it against a ruler.

Choose the measured size if it is offered, or the next available even size shown on that product. For regular Cuban collars, examples are 17 inches to 18 inches and 19 inches to 20 inches. Tiny Cuban collars have their own 12, 14 and 16-inch range: examples are 13 inches to 14 inches and 15 inches to 16 inches. Do not choose an 18 or 20-inch size for Tiny.

If your measurement is outside the sizes offered on the product, or you are unsure about fit, contact us before ordering. In particular, a Tiny measurement over 16 inches needs help choosing a different product rather than rounding down. Read the full measuring guide.
